The social crisis in Guadeloupe weakens Sébastien Lecornu

This is his first real political storm since his appointment to the government almost three years ago. The overseas minister, Sébastien Lecornu, finds himself under fire from critics for not yet having visited Guadeloupe, while the island is in a situation « Very explosive », in the words of Emmanuel Macron. For a week, a movement originating from the challenge of the vaccination obligation of caregivers and firefighters has degenerated into an outbreak of violence.

From left to right, the choice of Mr. Lecornu to follow the crisis from Paris arouses strong criticism in the ranks of the opposition. In particular Xavier Bertrand, the first to blame the minister for his absence on the ground. « I think that, President of the Republic, I would ask the minister himself to go there, we need a political authority on the spot », declared the candidate for the nomination of the party Les Républicains (LR) for the presidential election, Tuesday, November 23, on France Inter. Before asking: “If there were the same problems in metropolitan France, don’t you think the minister would be there? «  « When you are the government of France and hold the Republic, you go there, you don’t hide in Paris », in turn attacked the number three of the right-wing party, Aurélien Pradié, on LCP. Same reproach from the leader of La France insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, according to which Mr. Lecornu would not be « Not a great brave man ».

More boring for the executive: the president of the regional council of Guadeloupe, Ary Chalus, also lamented, Tuesday, on RTL, the absence of a minister on the spot, demanding that« An interministerial delegation » go to the island for  » to discuss  » with the unions. And so be able to « Calm things down ». This former deputy, member in 2017 of the executive committee of La République en Marche (LRM), today accuses the state of not treating Guadeloupe « In the same way as a region of France ».

« This is not the ideal time »

Mr. Lecornu finally agreed to surrender  » soon «  on the island. « Anyway, we are going to go to Guadeloupe because every time there is a major crisis overseas, I go », said the minister, Tuesday, on France 2, recalling that he had visited in August in Guadeloupe and Martinique. According to those around him, if the principle of this visit is « Obviously recorded, as each time it is necessary », its date is not yet defined. Before moving, Mr. Lecornu wants « Public order be restored » and « Individual dialogue with suspended personnel be resumed between actors in the field ». No question, therefore, of rushing. “The worst thing would be to go there for reasons dictated by Parisian contingencies. Crisis management overseas does not follow the same logic as in France ”, justifies his entourage.
