TF1 has acquired the exclusive broadcasting rights for the matches of the French football team until 2028

TF1 has acquired the exclusive broadcasting rights for the matches of the French football team until 2028, the channel announced on Friday July 22. TF1, joint holder with M6 of the rights to broadcast the matches of the Blues during the next League of Nations, as well as those of the retransmission of Euro 2024, will therefore broadcast the matches of the French team in the League of Nations after 2024 : « friendly matches, qualifying matches for Euro 2024, the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2028 »she explained in a press release.

The group, owned by Bouygues, has also announced that it has reached an agreement with the French Football Federation (FFF) « giving access to unpublished images of the team in the desire to produce series and documentaries around the Blues ».

“Clear” and “on all channels”

“It has never been so important to offer the French public free-to-air access to the biggest sporting events with the widest possible coverage and on all channels”said Gilles Pélisson, CEO of the TF1 group, quoted in the press release, in reference to the latest acquisitions of broadcasting rights.

At the end of June, the encrypted channel Canal+ announced that it had won all the broadcasting rights for the Champions League (C1), the Europa League (C3) and the Europa League Conference (C4) until 2027. “Mbappé, Ronaldo, Messi, Benzema, De Bruyne, Lewandowsky, Salah, Mané, Neymar… The greatest players in the world, the most beautiful European clashes and the best French players and clubs: only on Canal+”welcomed the channel in a statement released shortly after.

In mid-June, the American site Amazon won, against the encrypted channel, the status of new major partner of the French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 championship, obtaining, from next season for three years, eight of the ten Ligue 1 matches per day, including the ten best posters and the Sunday evening match for the 2021-2024 seasons. These matches will therefore not be broadcast on television on a free channel: they will be available against a premium subscription to Prime Video, from the Internet or a box.

In any case, TF1’s announcement puts an end to a period of uncertainty for the Blues and the FFF who, despite the world title won in 2018 and world-renowned players like Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema, were struggling to seduce broadcasters.

The call for tenders for the matches of the 2022-2028 period had thus remained unsuccessful last fall. At the end of March, when the contract signed in 2018 which associated TF1 and M6 as co-broadcasters of the Blues expired, the candidates were few in number and their financial proposals disappointing. The amount spent by TF1 for the acquisition of these rights is not yet known.
